Research and Innovation with the University of Manchester

UoM has significant and relevant experience is the design of advanced control algorithms for increasing energy efficiency in buildings, based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) techniques and stochastic optimisation, as well as the control and design of AC and DC grid connected electrical energy storage devices and the characterisation of energy storage elements.

Dr.Alessandra Parisio is the main University contact for our research collaboration, she is based in the Power and Energy Division, and is part of the School of Electrical and Engineering at The University of Manchester. Some of her previous studies have shown the potential benefits of a stochastic MPC framework, which can take uncertainty into account (e.g., weather, occupancy levels, user preferences) in the application area of modelling and optimal energy management for future smart energy systems, in particular for intelligent buildings, micro-grids and district heating power plants.

Qbots are also working closely with Dr. Rebecca Todd, a senior lecturer in the same Division as Dr. Parisio, she has experience of the design and operation of renewable systems, and extensive test experience with the Siemens SieStorage system. Her research interests cover the design, control and operation of energy storage systems which is being pursued by her being co-investigator on the EPSRC Multi-scale Analysis for Facilities for Energy Storage (Manifest) project.
