Outcomes

Cost reduction and new revenue streams

Challenge

The best time to establish protocols with your clients is when you onboard them.

The transportation sector faces increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency. Q Energy was tasked with enabling bus depots and Royal Mail's fleet to optimise energy use and create new revenue streams through smart energy management.

Solution

The best time to establish protocols with your clients is when you onboard them.

Q Energy developed the V2X dashboard to manage assets such as battery storage, heat pumps, solar installations, smart EV chargers, and V2G chargers. The solution includes:

  • Behind-the-meter optimization: Utilising market volatility and non-commodity charges to optimise energy assets.
  • DSO and DFS services: Leveraging distributed system operator and demand flexibility services to enhance energy trading.

Phase 1: Focused on bus depots, Q Energy analysed the potential of V2G services, establishing a model where bus depots with 100 buses equipped with 300 kWh batteries could provide 6MW of flexibility. This setup enables significant annual revenue per bus through energy exchanges with the grid.

Phase 2: Partnering with Royal Mail and Electric Green, Q Energy will looked at designing and an operating model to manage 40,000 light commercial vans using centralised charge points and wireless charging pads, starting in September 2023.

Results

The best time to establish protocols with your clients is when you onboard them.

  • Energy Cost Reduction: Significant savings through optimised energy management and reduced dependency on grid power.
  • New Revenue Streams: Access to new income sources through smart trading and asset optimisation.

The best time to establish protocols with your clients is when you onboard them.

Impacts

The best time to establish protocols with your clients is when you onboard them.

  • Environmental Benefits: Reduced carbon emissions and enhanced sustainability in fleet operations.
  • Economic Gains: Substantial financial benefits from new revenue streams and cost savings.
  • Innovative Technology Implementation: Pioneering the use of V2X and V2G technologies in large fleet operations, setting a benchmark for the industry.

Outcome
Higher uptime & stability

Challenge

As the UK moves toward net-zero 2050, managing the balance between intermittent renewable output and demand is critical. Minety required a way to store surplus energy, reduce curtailment and stabilise market prices without sacrificing reliability.

Solution

  • Battery Performance Monitoring System: Sub-second, real-time data capture from cells—up to 18,000 data points every 10 seconds.
  • Predictive Analytics: AI models detect anomalies early to improve efficiency and financial performance.
  • Dashboard Visualisation: Clear, decision-ready dashboards to accelerate issue resolution.

Results

  • Enhanced Energy Management: Tighter control of stored energy improves grid stability and dispatchability.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Early detection reduces downtime and preserves asset performance.

Impact

  • Capacity & Coverage: 150 MW supports ~15,000 homes for 24 hours, accelerating the transition to net-zero.
  • Innovative Technology: A benchmark for data-driven BESS operations and maintenance.
  • Collaboration & Investment: Partnerships with Shell, Sungrow and The Huaneng Group showcase scalable deployment.

Following Minety, Q Energy is deploying the same model across new regions—expanding predictive maintenance capabilities and improving reliability of renewable energy storage systems at scale.
