Q Energy is thrilled to announce that the WeForming Demonstrator site is now officially live and operational. This marks a major milestone for the multi-million-euro project, as the Rout Lëns district transitions into a fully operational 1MW energy hub.

Spanning 163,226 m² of sustainable urban development, the project is designed to support 1,500 dwellings and 1,100 electric vehicles (EVs). The district's ecosystem utilises 130 kWp of solar PV and 20 kW of fuel cell capacity for local generation. These assets are integrated with high-efficiency heat pumps and 350 kW ultra-fast EV chargers, with a 900 kWh battery storage network providing the necessary flexibility for peak shaving. This integrated infrastructure allows Q Energy to transform the residential and mobility hub into one of Europe’s most advanced grid-interactive districts.

Powering the Consortium’s Vision

Working alongside consortium partners such as LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology), IKO Real Estate, Sudstroum, Circu Li-ion, GenCell Energy, and Schneider Electric, Q Energy has deployed the essential hardware and AI infrastructure that helps transform this visionary development into a fully operational microgrid.

Q Energy has helped deliver, integrate, and currently manages the following critical assets:

  • Grid-Scale Storage Online: 430kWh Vilion Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are now operational. These units act as the district's energy buffer, storing excess solar power and discharging it during peak hours to prevent grid strain.
  • Next-Gen Mobility: A 350 kW fast-charging station is now active, featuring cutting-edge Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology. This allows the on-site electric vehicle fleet to function as mobile batteries, feeding power back into the hub when demand is high.
  • AI Optimisation in Control: Q Energy’s proprietary AI software has taken the helm, utilising the SmartQube IoT hub for dynamic on-site control. It is currently orchestrating this entire 1MW hub in real-time while actively monitoring and optimising onsite assets such as the solar PV arrays and heat pumps. By unifying these diverse systems, the AI executes complex strategies for peak shaving and load balancing to ensure the district functions as a resilient, cost-efficient microgrid.

Leadership Perspectives

"The activation of the Rout Lëns demonstrator establishes a scalable blueprint for the future of European energy," said Dr. Li Yao, Managing Director at Q Energy. "As electrification accelerates across the continent, the grid faces unprecedented pressure. By successfully orchestrating solar, storage, and V2G assets into a unified, responsive hub here in Luxembourg, we are proving that urban developments can solve, rather than create, grid challenges. We are demonstrating the exact technical and operational model needed to build a resilient, decarbonized Europe."

About the WeForming Project

The WeForming project is an innovation action funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Programme. It aims to demonstrate how interoperable, data-driven buildings can support a secure and carbon-free energy ecosystem. The Luxembourg demo is one of six sites across Europe validating these next-generation technologies.
